What are the Benefits of a High Quality Turmeric Supplement?
Turmeric has garnered a lot of attention in recent years, even though it's been used in Aryuvedic medicine for centuries. If you're curious how turmeric can help improve your health and what kind of supplements are right for you, read on.
Turmeric powder vs. curcumin extract- what's the difference?
Many of us were first introduced to turmeric in the spice aisle of the grocery store, or in the pantry of an adventurous chef. However, food-grade turmeric powder does not provide the same benefits as a high quality supplement. That's because the active ingredient in turmeric, a compound called curcumin, needs to be delivered in concentrated doses to provide maximum health benefits.
Turmeric powder alone does not contain enough curcumin to provide substantial health benefits, so when you choose turmeric products, you'll want to make sure that the product contains an extract. Our turmeric capsules have a 60% curcumin extract ratio, the highest ratio possible to make a safe and effective supplement.
How does curcumin get absorbed in the body?
Even though curcumin is a strong antioxidant with anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, it is not easily absorbed by the body. However, studies have shown that adding black pepper extract (piperine) can drastically improve absorption rates.
In a recent NCBI study, combining curcumin extract with piperine increased absorption rates up to 2000%. Essentially, the body can't absorb curcumin without it- so always check your labels to make sure it's included (ours has a high quality piperine extract called Bioperine).
So what can a quality turmeric supplement actually do for my health?
Turmeric can reduce inflammation
There is mounting evidence in the scientific community that chronic, low-level inflammation is part of the underlying cause of many chronic diseases including heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's, and many other degenerative diseases. Turmeric's active compounds can play a key role in reducing generalized inflammation.
Curcumin reduces inflammation by blocking NF-kB, a molecule that travels into the nuclei of your body's cells and activates genes related to inflammation.
Tumeric boosts brain function
Curcumin has been shown to elevate levels of the brain hormone known as BDNF, which is responsible for the growth of new neurons, and combats degeneration in the brain. For this reason, it may help with staving off degenerative brain diseases, and can help boost your memory on a day-to-day basis.
Turmeric can help with arthritis pain
Arthritis is a common, but painful disease of the joints that is extremely common. Many studies have shown that curcumin can actually be a more effective treatment for arthritis than traditional anti-inflammatory drugs (rheumatoid arthritis in particular.
Turmeric can help fight aging and can help prevent cancer*
Curcumin contains a potent supply of anti-oxidants that may make it an effective tool for increasing longevity and fighting off age-related diseases caused by oxidation of cells.
In addition, studies have shown that it can contribute to the death of cancerous cells, reduce growth of new blood vessels in tumors, and may limit cancer from spreading throughout the body.
